The ending of a Peer Support Program should be planned at the beginning and discussed with participants during the program.
It can help to lessen any disappointment or grief participants might feel at the end. They may have developed a strong emotional investment in the program or in their peer relationships. It's crucial that participants do not feel ‘abandoned’. Some may need extra support.
A clear process at the end of the program helps to ensure relationships end positively. Some programs hold a celebration to provide a formal recognition of the conclusion.
Guidance for closing the relationship:
- acknowledge and support the experiences of all parties, including the young person’s parent and/or guardian
- focus on the accomplishments of the relationship
- discuss program participants’ current and future needs, and how they may continue to pursue their goals outside of the peer support relationship
- link young people to relevant supports in the community to assist with ongoing personal growth
- clarify if there will be any future contact or ongoing relationship between the peer supporter and young person outside of the program
- ensure the process provides information to evaluate the program.
