The Mentoring Program requires procedures to enable both parties to end the relationship in a positive manner.
A Mentoring Program is usually for a set period of time, although matches may close for other reasons. Participants may leave the program, circumstances change so that the relationship is unable to continue, the mentee reaches a point where mentoring is no longer needed.
Guidance for closing the relationship:
- acknowledge and support the experiences of all parties, including the mentee’s parent and/or guardian
- focus on the accomplishments of the relationship
- consider the ongoing pursuit of the mentor and mentee's personal goals
- clarify if there will be any future contact or ongoing relationship between the mentor and mentee outside of the Mentoring Program. Ongoing contact is okay as long as both parties agree to it - the mentor may have become a key significant adult in the young person’s life.
- ensure the process provides information to evaluate the program.
